Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors - ACE Inhibitors

Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) Inhibitors
ACE inhibitors prevent a chemical in the blood called angiotensin I, from being converted into a substance that can increase salt and water retention in the body, thus lowering blood pressure. ACE inhibitors also help to relax blood vessels, allowing more oxygen-rich blood to reach the heart.
ACE inhibitors are available by prescription and come in various forms including tablets, capsules, and by injection. Some popular ACE inhibitors include Univasc, Aceon, Accupril, Lotensin, Capoten, Prinivil, Zestril, Vasotec, Monopril, Altace, and Mavik.
Side effects can include headache, dry cough, dizziness, skin rashes, kidney problems, and swelling of the face, lips, and throat.
