Diuretics
Diuretic medications are used to increase the removal of sodium and water from the body, helping to relax blood vessels and lower pressure. Such medications are often paired with other high blood pressure medications and some medications on the market today actually combine a diuretic with another proven anti-hypertension drug.
Diuretics are usually the first line of defense against high blood pressure and are prescribed to most patients. They are especially beneficial to those who in high risk categories (such as patients who are black or overweight). Diuretics can, in some cases, worsen existing conditions of diabetes and some forms of heart disease, so they must be used carefully, under the supervision of a physician.
Diuretics are considered the most effective medication for lowering blood pressure. Side effects can include increased urination, arrhythmias, onset of gout, increased thirst, weakness, impotence, and dehydration.
