Preventing High Blood Pressure
Everyone, whether diagnosed with high blood pressure or not, can lower their chances of developing hypertension. If you are at risk for high blood pressure, as a result of uncontrollable factors such as race, heredity and age, it is important to begin protecting yourself immediately by taking the following steps:
- Maintain a healthy body weight. If you weigh more than 30 percent over normal body weight you would be categorized as obese and are at a higher risk for hypertension. Consult your doctor to find your healthy, normal body weight.
- Maintain a diet that is low in sodium and salt.
- Drink alcohol in moderation.
- Exercise regularly.
Because there is no known cause of high blood pressure, it is hard to say just how to prevent it. However, living a healthy lifestyle using the suggestions above can help reduce your risk of a myriad of health complications. Of course, if you are diagnosed with hypertension, there are medications to help lower your blood pressure, but it is always better to prevent a disease than have to fight it.
